Should victims that have been raped go to jail for hurting or killing their rapist? The amount of women that have been raped is over 1 million in the United States. Most women or girls have been raped or sexually assaulted at least once in their lifetime. Victims that have been raped should not go to jail for killing or hurting their rapist.

One reason that victims that have been raped should not go to jail for killing or hurting their rapist is that most rapists don’t go to jail for what they have done. According to UK Center for Research on Violence Against Women, only 37% of reported rape cases have been prosecuted meaning that the police only go after some rapists. Only 18% of the people who the police go after are being put in jail. Many victims don’t want to report mainly because they don’t want to talk to the police. This is mainly because many victims are traumatized by what happened to them. When you have to tell the police your story you need to tell them the details of what happened. Many wouldn’t want to relive it. When they report to the police nothing gets done and the victims don’t get the justice they deserve to put their rapist in jail.

Another reason why victims should not go to jail is because their rapist could rape others. Victims that have experienced being raped know how it feels and they wouldn’t want anyone else to go through what they have been through.  Most rapists don’t go to jail for what they have done, which means they can do it again. Some of them have mental health challenges and they don’t get the help they need. Therefore, it is not the victim’s fault for doing harm to their rapist if they have not been put in jail.

My last reason why victims should not go to jail is that they are often doing self-defense. Sometimes victims take matters into their own hands because they have had enough. For example, according to an article in The National Review, one woman who was sexually abused had called 911 more than 300 times and no one came. One morning this woman’s abuser said “One of us is going to die.” After he said this the woman snapped and killed him. This woman has been brutalized for decades. This woman shouldn’t go to jail because she was only doing self-defense to stop him from killing her. I feel like she was doing the only thing she could have done to stop him. Half of the female murder victims in the US have been murdered by their partners. This shows how many female victims have the fear that they might die one day from their partner if they don’t do anything about it. Victims shouldn’t go to jail for doing something to stop the abuse they were going through. This abuse must have been so bad up to the point they had to hurt or kill them to try to stop them.

This is why victims that have been raped should not go to jail for killing or hurting their rapist. Many people think that if someone breaks the law they would need to go to jail. But raping someone is breaking the law and why are they not being put to jail in the first place? Victims shouldn’t have to take matters into their own hands, because nothing has been done to stop their rapist. It’s not the victim’s fault for trying to stop their rapist.
